About Us

OUR HISTORY

Hertz Northern Bus was established in 1971, and is committed to consistently providing high quality and safe pupil and staff transfer transportation services. Our goal is to provide the best possible customer service with minimal effort by our clients.  We operate as a full-service pupil and staff transfer transportation company. At Hertz Northern Bus we do more than just supply buses/shuttles and drivers.  Our company administers all aspects of pupil and staff transfer transportation in a professional, competent, and respectful manner. Besides the provision of school bus and shuttle transportation our services include; selection of equipment, school bus/staff transfer driver recruitment and training, licensing and supervision, managing safety programs, producing routes and maps, ensuring our compliance to all vehicle regulations and licensing, and management of vehicle maintenance and inspection.

We have made it our mission to develop systems, policies and regulations to recruit qualified personnel, with the goal of addressing your client’s transportation requirements. We believe that over the past 42 years we have achieved the goal of providing one of the highest levels of customer service in pupil and staff transportation in Canada, while at the same time requiring minimal input from Board administration.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

At Hertz Northern Bus we believe that a positive work atmosphere and extensive training program are the reason we have a successful driver retention and recruitment.  Our local knowledge of where and when to advertise for school bus drivers is key to ensuring we are staffed 100%. We feel strongly that due to our firm’s positive and supportive working environment, that we are able to fully staff our driving positions.  As we are a long time Saskatchewan company we have the advantage of developing driver recruitment and driver support policies and procedures that ensure that we have the highest quality professional bus/shuttle drivers and management.

OUR VALUE ADDED SERVICES

Hertz Northern Bus utilizes a computerized database program to track information on students, schools, routes, drivers, vehicles, charter trips, payroll, and vehicle maintenance and inspection records.  The extensive database program not only assists in the day-to-day operation of our company but it also enables us to provide critical information to the Board, schools, drivers and parents in timely manner.

Bus Delays

When a bus is running late, the driver communicates to the office staff that they are running 10 minutes late via the two-way FM radio in the bus.  The office then updates the bus info hotline 306-374-4777 to make this information available to students and families.

DRIVER HIRING & RETENTION

Hertz Northern Bus adheres to a policy of non-discrimination in its hiring practices.  It is our belief that drivers are an integral part of the pupil transportation operation.  Our school bus drivers are considered professionals and our training is geared towards creating the expert school bus driver.  We feel that this approach to instruction has shown proven benefits, as it is often brought to our attention that we employ a highly professional and competent staff.

DRIVER TRAINING

After completion of the “requirements to become a school bus driver” screening review, and the passing of a written/computer test at SGI, applicants can then begin our training program. There is a combination of in-class and on-the-bus work involved with many hours of personalized instruction. Training is performed one-on-one to ensure all trainees receive the maximum benefit from our program.

Once the Operations Manager is confident that the trainee is adequately prepared, they are then required to complete an SGI School Bus Road test, which is required to be passed prior to employment. After a successful road test the new employee is given an Employee Manual, which explains all aspects of the company policies and procedures.
